Mt Carmel Municipal Golf Course first opened for play in 1922 as a private 9 hole golf course owne by Mt. Carmel Country Club. In 1936, the country club entered into an agreement to sell their entire real estate holdings to the city. This included the country club building, 9 hole golf course and tennis courts. The city got their WPA money and paid the country club $4,750 for their entire holdings. The city then quickly built a pool, pool building and pond (which is now on the 18th tee). The total project cost was $86,000. This is also when the first grass greens were installed.
The city has operated the course continually since then. In 1973, the north 9 was opened to make the course a complete 18 holes.
Mt Carmel Municipal Golf Course is a great course for the average golfer. The fairways on the front nine are wide open, and the fairways on back nine are tree lined and narrow. The large greens are slightly sloped, and ponds come into play on three holes. The signature hole is #15, a 238-yard, par 3, requiring a long tee shot over a ditch to a small green with out-of-bounds stakes coming into play if you hit your shot too long.
The Mt Carmel Municipal Golf Course plays to a par-71 and 6,121 yards from the back tees. The course rating is 69.2 and ithe slope rating is 123.
